Attorney David Coates Leaning Against the Pillar

Hailing from the Great White North, David moved from western Canada to the subtropics of Florida in search of warm weather, beaches and a first-rate legal education at Stetson University. While at school, Mr. Coates was a member of Stetson's award-winning Moot Court Board where he honed his oral and verbal advocacy skills.

Following his graduation in 2006, Mr. Coates worked tirelessly as part of a group of investors to charter a de novo bank in Florida. Along the way, he negotiated and drafted numerous contracts, assisted with intellectual property litigation and ate an inordinate amount of finger sandwiches at board meetings. After two successful years in the finance industry, Mr. Coates turned his attention to criminal defense, immigration law, and patent litigation.

Heeding the call to serve his nation, Mr. Coates joined the U.S. Army in 2008 and served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.  He was stationed at Fort Eustis, Virginia and Redstone Arsenal, Alabama and received numerous medals for his service including the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal.  He was also recognized during his training to become a JAG Officer for having superior oral advocacy skills.

While stationed at Redstone Arsenal, Mr. Coates served as the Chief of Legal Assistance.  A major portion of his duties involved estate planning for the military community in Huntsville, Alabama and surrounding areas. He also assisted clients with family numerous family law matters, including divorce, child custody, child support, and adoptions.

Mr. Coates established the Law Offices of David Coates in Chattanooga in 2015 and subsequently expanded to another location in Huntsville, Alabama.
